When syncing grades to Google Classroom or Schoology, you may notice two options for how your lesson points are mapped: Linear Mapping and Explicit Mapping. If you've already been syncing grades, you’re probably familiar with the basic steps—go to the gradebook, select either Google Classroom or Schoology, and you’ll reach the mapping page where these two options appear.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how they work:
Linear Mapping (Default)
By default, Linear Mapping is selected. This method is fast and automatic. You simply answer the question:
"How many points should this x point lesson scale to?"
For example, if your lesson is originally worth 10 points, and you want it to scale down to 4 points, you just enter 4 into the field. The system will then automatically rescale all the points in the lesson proportionally.
It’s perfect when you want consistent scaling across the entire lesson without adjusting individual scores.
Explicit Mapping
If you want more control, Explicit Mapping is the way to go.
Start by entering the total number of points you want the lesson to scale to (just like you would for linear mapping). Then, click the Explicit Mapping button.
This will show you the points each student earned, allowing you to manually adjust scores if needed.
Explicit Mapping is useful when you want to give different weight rather than scaling everything evenly.
Quick Summary
-
Linear Mapping = Fast and automatic scaling of points.
-
Explicit Mapping = Manual adjustment of points for more detailed control.
Both options are simple to use—you just choose the one that fits how you want your students’ work to be graded!
